i was visiting a military base, and i was waiting on a bench and in front of me was a parked hummer H1. I was looking at it and i noticed something interesting, the axles were not at the center of the tires.

Well, not to be "that guy," but unless you were looking at the civilian version, you were looking at a HMMWV, not a Hummer.

One of the main KPP's for the HMMWV was mobility. To gain ground clearance, the powertrain is 'high up' in the chassis. To reduce the included halfshaft angle to the wheel hubs, they employ portal hubs (aka geared hubs). A PITA to keep well maintained, but critical to mobility...

If you look closely, you'll also notice no brake hardware in the wheel... This is because the HMMWV has inboard mounted brake discs.

Unimogs have portal hubs with a straight axle. Very rugged, but tend to overheat in road use at any speed above "slow".

some 4 wheel magazine that comes to my house for some reason built a portal axle equipped F250...I approve. Lots more ground clearance with same lift height and lower gearing.

well i hadn't thought of the brakes thanks for sharing that, where are the brake disks, on the axles? or the driveshaft? like a monster truck?

You got it (although, that's not a HMMWV)... each corner has its own disc brake mounted to the side of the differential and the halfshaft bolts to the rotor hub.

P.S. it's amazingly hard to find public pics of this stuff that I used to see at work regularly...

Hand's down my preference over the Unimog. More utility space and Does not have the inflated fanboy prices...perhaps I should've kept this to myself.

ah yes it wasnt of a humvee, i said "i got the picture" meaning that now i knew how it looked like, that looks like a PITA to change rotors
